To proactively address the looming threat of flooding in 2025, Forward Africa convened a strategic Stakeholders’ Engagement Meeting in Oguta, Imo State, under its initiative:
“Supporting Sustainable Efforts to Enhance Climate Change Awareness and Education for Flood Disaster Prevention.”
The meeting brought together key community actors, including representatives of the Traditional Ruler, Wife of the Traditional Prime Minister, Women and Youth Leaders, religious leaders from CAN, PFN, and the Catholic Church, Head of the Farmers Association, NOA Oguta, Chief of Staff to the LGA Chaiman and civil society organizations.
Event Highlights:
A pre-test was conducted to gauge participants’ awareness of climate change and flood risks.
A powerful presentation on NIMET’s 2025 flood forecast, identified high-risk areas in Oguta and stressed the urgency for early preparedness.
Stakeholder responsibilities were discussed and Stakeholders were assigned clear roles, which include: to educate their communities/groups, implement local preventive measures, and lead grassroots mobilization, make adequate preparation by fixing the Government owned internally displaced Persons center (IDP) for use as the place is presently in a deplorable condition, set up flood gauge in designated places, be active members of the community alert group (CAG), etc.
Participants left empowered, charged with the responsibility to cascade the knowledge and begin building community-level resilience.
The message is clear: The forecast is not just a warning—it’s a call to action. Oguta must act now!
