CLIMATE CHANGE AND FLOODING: THE DANGER IS CLOSER THAN WE THINK
At Forward Africa, our ongoing project “Supporting Sustainable Efforts for Climate Change Awareness and Flood Disaster Prevention” in Oguta and Ohaji/Egbema communities in Imo State has revealed a persistent and painful truth:
The biggest threat isn't just the floodwaters—it's the lack of information, preparation, and sustained attention.
Every year, communities in these riverine areas face devastating floods that displace families, destroy livelihoods, and overwhelm already fragile support systems. And every year, responses come only after the damage is done.
Through our stakeholder engagements, we’ve identified three major challenges:
Lack of access to early flood predictions
Minimal awareness of climate-smart agricultural practices
Neglect and absence of emergency infrastructure before and during flood events
As of June 2025, the floods have already begun—slowly but steadily. IDP camps remain in deplorable condition, and vulnerable communities are once again unprepared.
This cycle must be broken. Everyone—government, civil society, and individuals—has a role to play.
How We Can All Help Prevent & Reduce Flood Impacts:
Disseminate timely flood alerts and updates from trusted sources like @nimetnigeria
Promote climate-resilient agriculture and livelihood training
Rehabilitate and equip IDP camps ahead of emergencies
Support environmental protection efforts—tree planting, drainage clearing, waste control
Strengthen local awareness and grassroots climate advocacy
Flooding in Nigeria is not a distant threat—it’s already here.
We must act before it worsens.
We Call on Partners & Supporters to Join This Mission:
Together, we can build resilient, informed, and prepared communities across Nigeria’s most vulnerable regions.
Let’s stop reacting—and start preparing.
